Peter Gutteridge

A founding member of both The Clean and The Chills, Peter Guttridge’s impact on the New Zealand music scene can not be overstated. His following work with Snapper, The Great Unwashed, and his incredible solo record Pure, stand out as defining recordings from the era and Gutteridge undeniably provided the launch pad for hundreds of artists. Dubbed by Billboard as an “underground icon”, and “one of New Zealand music spiky heroes” by The Guardian, he will always stand apart as an essential piece of everything that emerged afterwards.

“The best record of the Flying Nun/Xpressway imperial era? That would be quite the claim. But it’s certainly very close to being my favourite. A perfectly imperfect document of lo-fi DIY creativity, on a wing and on a prayer and continually inspired, sidewinding through the art damaged triumvirate of the Velvets-Suicide-The Fall with an accentuated sense of lop-sided melody.”.
